If Taylor Swift’s “I Knew It, I Knew You” from Toy Story 5 wins the Oscar for best original song on March 14, it will mark the first time in nearly 40 years that back-to-back Oscar-winning songs have been No. 1 Hot 100 hits. “Golden” from KPop Demon Hunters won earlier this year, afterHUNTR/X’s recording of the song spent eight nonconsecutive weeks on top last year. Swift’s song spent its first two weeks on top in June.

This would be the first time that back-to-back winners for best original song were No. 1 Hot 100 hits since the 1980s. From 1982 to 1988, seven consecutive Oscar winners were No. 1 hits. Before that, back-to-back Oscar winners were No. 1 hits in 1977 and 1978, and a bit further back, three consecutive Oscar winners, from 1972 to 1974, were No. 1 hits.

There is no assurance that Swift’s song, which she co-wrote with her frequent collaborator Jack Antonoff, will win. But it has a lot going for it. The song is a smash hit. Swift is well known to even the least music-aware Oscar voter. And Toy Story 5 is the top-grossing film of 2026 on boxofficemojo.com both domestically (defined as the U.S. and Canada) and worldwide.

The Academy will announce the shortlist of 15 contenders for best original song on Tuesday Dec. 15. Nominations will be announced on Thursday, Jan. 21, 2017. The awards will be presented on Sunday, March 14.

The Motion Picture Academy first awarded bestoriginalsong in 1935.Billboardlaunched the Hot 100 in 1958. In the chart’s 68-year history, only 18songs have hit No. 1 and also wonbestoriginalsong.B.J. Thomas’“Raindrops Keep Fallin’on My Head”wasthe first song to achieve the double distinction. The jaunty tune, fromButch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid,spent four weeks at No. 1 inJanuary1970before winning the Oscar that April.

Barbra StreisandandJennifer Warnesare the only artists who have topped the Hot 100 twice with Oscar-winning songs.Burt Bacharach,Giorgio MoroderandWill Jenningsare the only songwriters who have won two Oscars for songs that topped the Hot 100.

The 1970s and 1980swere a heyday for best original song winnerstopping the Hot 100, but thedouble distinction became far less common beginning in the 1990s.That decade, only two songsearned the double victory, followed by one each in the2000s and 2010s and one (so far) in the 2020s.

In chronological order, here are the 18songs that have doubledupatopthe Hot 100 and at the Oscars. The year shown is the year of the Oscar ceremony.
