AGT Recap: Who Got Simon Cowells Last Golden Buzzer?

Night four of Auditions in Season 21 ofAmerica’s Got Talent featured another handful of skilled contestants showing off their talents for judges Simon Cowell, Mel B., Howie Mandel, and Sofia Vergara.

With six Golden Buzzers used in the first three episodes, there were four left by Episode 4. Mandel already used both of his Golden Buzzers, but Cowell, Mel B., Vergara, and host Terry Crews each had one chance left to move an act directly to the Live Shows.

Olivia Befus

The first act of the night was 17-year-old Olivia Befus, who performed a coordinated act with two of her dogs. She said she was self-taught after years of watchingAGT.

Mel B. was on her feet applauding her afterwards, while Vergara gushed, “You’re so young and so good! You did a great job.” Mandel raved, “I think that’s the most inspiring spot in the world and the fact that you were inspired and you come here and you inspire millions more to see what they do here? That was beautiful.”

Cowell pointed out that Olivia’s dogs are “not easy” to train and told the teenager that she has a “real gift.” All four judges voted yes to move Olivia forward.

James & Marina

Next up, mentalist couple James and Marina showed off their insane talent. They revealed that they began implementing their mind-reading abilities almost immediately after meeting on a dating app in 2017.

As Marina guessed random objects pulled from audience members and put into a box, Cowell pointed out, “This is actually quite incredible,” and Mel B. said, “This is crazy.”

“There was nothing in your ears. This is one of my favorite acts of this season by far,” Mel continued. Mandel jumped in to add, “It was amazing. Well done. Well performed.”

Unsurprisingly, James and Marina received four yeses from the judges.

Brook Lynn

Brook Lynn, a 23-year-old singer from the Netherlands, was admittedly nervous before her performance, as she’d never sung in front of a big crowd before. But she had the crowd at her fingertips as she sang “The Greatest” by Billie Eilish.

Vergara said she “loved” the performance and song choice. “You have a beautiful voice. I can feel that you’re very, very nervous, but you shouldn’t be because you have it all,” the actress added.

Mel B. agreed that Brook’s voice sounded “so, so beautiful,” and Mandel called the performance “haunting,” while also praising Brook Lynn for being open about her anxiety on the show. All four judges agreed that it was a yes for Brook Lynn.

Kyle Johnson

Next to audition was Kyle Johnson, a 58-year-old who promised to “surprise the heck” out of the judges and audience. He attached himself to two dummy dolls and danced across the stage, prompting Cowell, Mandel, and Vergara to hit their red buzzers to express their disappointment.

“We usually love surprises here at AGT, but this wasn’t a good surprise for me. Whatever this is, it’s not for AGT,” Vergara admitted. Cowell said he found the performance funny for “about 30 seconds,” but didn’t want to watch it any longer after that.

While Mel said the routine was “original,” the other three judges overruled her.

Grant Parsons

For his audition, Grant Parsons said he was going to do something he doesn’t think has been done on the show before. Well, he was probably right, as his act consisted of him tapping on his neck to the beat of Vanessa Carlton‘s “A Thousand Miles.”

Immediately, Mandel, Vergara, and Mel B. hit their red buzzers to make it clear they were not interested. Cowell wanted to see a second song, but Vergara wouldn’t allow it. “No, no, no,” she said, while pointing to the three red buzzers. “Go home.”

Micah Bean

Hoping to have better luck was Micah Bean, a singer from Tennessee. His heavy metal version of “Toxic” by Britney Spears did not impress the judges, and Cowell, Mel B., and Vergara all hit red buzzers.

Cowell called the performance a “nightmare,” while Vergara said, “I thought you were going to be a nice country music boy and then the devil came out of your mouth.”

With three immediate nos, Micah did not move forward in the competition.

Herwan Legaillard

Next to take the stage was Herwan Legaillard. The judges were immediately concerned, as he came with a “surprise” act, just like the last few disappointing contestants.

Herwan combined sword swallowing and an aerial routine that both terrified and impressed the judges. But even though Mel and Vergara had to cover their eyes some of the time, all four judges were on their feet applauding afterwards.

“We weren’t expecting that,” Cowell said. Mel B. was almost speechless. “I’ve seen things in bits and pieces, but put all together … what was that?! It was great.” Vergara called Herwan’s routine “spectacular.”

With those rave reviews, he moved forward in the competition with four yeses.

Madelyn Tallent & Malachi Martin

Next, singing duo and friends Madelyn Tallent and Malachi Martin, who have only been playing together for six months, performed a country rendition of “Counting Stars” by One Republic.

“I thought you were so authentic and real,” Cowell said. “Your voice is fantastic. You’ve got a great chemistry together. I loved the song choice, personally. I really loved both of you.”

Mandel admitted that the duo “didn’t seem ready,” but Vergara and Cowell disagreed. Mel told Mandel she “fully understands” what he was saying but told the duo, “You’re very talented.”

It was a no from Mandel, who said Madelyn and Malachi should polish up and come back next season. However, Cowell, Vergara, and Mel B. said yes, so the pair is moving on.

Rubén Roldán Bustos

Rubén Roldán Bustos performed an extremely difficult parkour routine. Before he began, he revealed that he only has one leg, and he did the whole course without his prosthetic.

“That was amazing. Spectacular,” Vergara promised. Rubénrevealed that he lost his leg after an accident with a tractor.

“That was bloody fantastic,” Cowell agreed. “I have so much respect for your talent and your courage.” He also pressed his Golden Buzzer for Rubén, which means the 23-year-old will be automatically in the Live Shows.

Bird and Byron

Another music duo, Bird and Byron, who have known each other for 20 years, were up next. They performed an original song called “I’ll Always Be There.”

“I thought that was absolutely beautiful and haunting,” Mandel said, while also raving over the “perfect pitch.” Vergara called it “the most perfect audition I’ve seen this season.”

Meanwhile, Cowell wondered why we haven’t heard of this duo yet. “Your voice is sensational and the way the two of you are together … and you wrote the song as well. That was really good,” he added.

It was unanimous yeses from the panel for Bird and Byron.

Mr. Hammerhead

Mr. Hammerhead previously had a failed audition onAGT in Season 18, but returned for his comeback. This time, he wanted to break a world record of breaking the most baseball bats by hand in 30 seconds.

The mark to beat was 25 baseball bats and Mr. Hammerhead broke 31, which meant he set a new world record.

“He redeemed himself. It’s a yes for me. I want to see another record,” Mandel said. The other judges agreed, giving him four yeses to move forward.

Mackenzie Sol

Mackenzie Sol previously auditioned for Cowell on a U.K. television show when he was just 4 years old. Now 21 years older, Mackenzie came to AGT with a performance of Sombr’s “Back to Friends.”

Mackenzie received a standing ovation from the judges. “I think you are absolutely, extraordinarily fabulous,” Mel B. gushed. “I’m glad I got to speak first because I’m going to do this…”

She then went on to push her Golden Buzzer, which means Mackenzie will be headed to the Live Shows.

Patrox

The final performance of the night was from Patrox, who came to the show from Germany. When he first showed off his dance skills, the judges and audience were confused, as the music kept skipping, and the moves seemed to make no sense. But after he finished, a video of the routine in reverse played, and it all clicked.

“I love that!” Mandel raved. “That’s what we’re waiting for.” Mel B. added, “What you’ve just done, I don’t think I’ve ever, ever seen. No wonder you were so excited. You have a big secret to show us all. That was brilliant!”

After the overwhelmingly positive responses, Patrox received his four yeses.
