John Cena to Star in Looney Tunes Movie Coyote vs. Acme

Movies

Lots of good things are happening in John Cena‘s acting career. Per Deadline, the Peacemaker star has just landed the lead role in Coyote vs. Acme, a live-action/animation hybrid set in the Looney Tunes universe. Dave Green directs the feature using a screenplay by Samy Burch. The concept of the film is inspired by the New Yorker article “Coyote v. Acme” by Ian Frazier.

Coyote vs. Acme follows Wile E. Coyote, who “after ACME products fail him one too many times in his dogged pursuit of the Roadrunner, decides to hire a billboard lawyer to sue the ACME Corporation. The case pits Wile E. and his lawyer against the latter’s intimidating former boss (Cena), but a growing friendship between man and cartoon stokes their determination to win.”

The project keeps Cena in the Warner Bros. family following the recent premiere on Peacemaker on HBO Max. Based on the show’s success, it was just recently announced that Peacemaker was renewed for a second season. Of course, one major difference is that Peacemaker is very much not for kids, while Coyote vs. Acme will be a family friendly film. Peacemaker creator James Gunn is producing Coyote vs. Acme with Chris DeFaria under Gunn’s Two Monkeys, A Goat and Another, Dead, Monkey production banner.

This project also continues to keep Warner Bros.’ classic Looney Tunes characters present in mainstream films. Last year, Bugs Bunny and the gang reunited to team up with LeBron James for the comedy sequel Space Jam: A New Legacy. It had been nearly two decades since they’d last been seen in theaters with Looney Tunes: Back in Action, another live-action animation hybrid, releasing in 2003.

John Cena Is Staying Busy in Hollywood

At the moment, Cena is riding a wave as the star of Peacemaker, reprising the role he played in last year’s The Suicide Squad. He has plenty more in the works in his acting career as well. After appearing in F9 as one of the latest additions to the Fast family, Cena has expressed his desire to return for the final film of the Fast and Furious series. Given that Cena and Vin Diesel play brothers, it seems likely Cena will be back in some capacity in the next installment of the series which will bring the main movie franchise to a close.

This doesn’t mean we have seen the last of Cena in a WWE ring. He is not retired as a professional wrestler, even if he has had to spend a lot of time away from the wrestling business lately to star in major movies along with his own HBO Max series. It’s not clear when Cena will be back in WWE, but with the Peacemaker star still in fantastic shape, he could very easily slip back into the world of sports entertainment at any time. For as much as people joke about not being able to see him, we’ll be seeing him an awful lot moving forward.

Coyote vs. Acme is scheduled to be released in movie theaters on July 21, 2023.
