Ryan Reynolds may be on a break from acting, but he is not on a break from being Ryan Reynolds, and it has been business as usual on the actor’s social media accounts where he has been reminding everyone that he has not really gone anywhere. After a busy 2021, Reynolds rounded out the year by helping raise $850 million for the SickKids Foundation in support of Toronto’s Hospital for Sick Children with his ugly sweater campaign. Originating as a prank played on Reynolds by friends Hugh Jackman and Jake Gyllenhaal in 2018, in which Reynolds was led to believe that he was attending a function that required him to wear an ugly sweater when of course he didn’t.

However, not one to let something like that go, Reynolds turned his hilarious humiliation into a hero moment by using the sweater to raise serious amounts of money in aid of charity. Turning his ugly sweater into a symbol of his Help Ryan Help SickKids campaign, Reynolds has had the last laugh as usual and today shared with his followers the news of the phenomenal amount raised in 2021 for the cause. In his post, Reynolds wrote:

“Thank you for helping this butt-ugly sweater raise over $850,000 for Sick Kids Foundation. Turning something ugly into something beautiful is what @sickkidsvs does every day. Big thanks, @samsungcanada, @mapleleafs and all who gave.”

The post was liked by almost 1.3 million people, including fellow celebrities such as Jason Momoa, and Reynolds’ Spirited co-star Octavia Spencer, and the achievement itself is just another example of what both celebrity status and the internet can achieve when used the right way.

Since appearing together in X-Men Origins: Wolverine, Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman have spent over decade ribbing and badgering each other on social media, playing out a game of one-upmanship that has kept their followers entertained and also been put to good use in ways such as this ugly sweater charity fundraiser.

Reynolds surprised everyone when he announced that he was taking a sabbatical from acting following filming on his Christmas movie Spirited, but you would hardly notice thanks to the actor’s constant social media presence and the long list of movies he is currently appearing in. Reynolds will soon be seen in The Adam Project, which was recently given a March 11th release date by Netflix, and Spirited comes out just in time for Christmas. However, Reynolds clearly isn’t planning on taking too long a break considering his growing number of projects lining up for his return.

Along with Deadpool 3, which is in early stages of pre-production, Reynolds is expected to return alongside Dwayne Johnson and Gal Gadot for two more Red Notice movies which will shoot back to back. As one of the busiest and most bankable stars in Hollywood at the minute, there is very little that could curb the rising popularity of Reynolds, and for his fans that is just how it should be.
