Taylor Swift Lights Up Central Park With Performances Of ‘You Need to Calm Down,’ ‘Me!’ & More On ‘GMA’: Watch

In addition to the two track from ‘Lover,’ Swift surprised fans with a run through ‘Shake it Off.’

Taylor Swift packed Central Park on Thursday morning (Aug. 22) for a special three-song performance on Good Morning America to promote Friday’s (Aug. 23) release of her seventh album, Lover.

Swift performed the album’s first two singles, “Me!” and “You Need to Calm Down,” as well as her smash 1989 hit “Shake It Off,” delighting Swifties — many of whom had begun lining up for the concert the night before

With four backup singer/dancers quadrupling her vocals, Swift commanded the stage for “You Need to Calm Down,” strutting the stage for the LGBTQ anthem in sparkly pink high-waisted shorts and a sheer pink shirt over a black tank.

Swift also sat down with co-host Robin Roberts to talk about the album and reveal the story behind the romantic title track.

“‘Lover’s a song I’m so proud of. I wrote it alone… the video come out tonight! Which is insane.” Swift said to shouts of apprpoval from the crowd, adding that, if forced to choose a favorite from the album, “every lyric” on “Lover” is very, very close to hear heart. “I’m really proud of that song…that song is like a cozy, warm blanket for me…I just think lyrically top-to-bottom that song, of the things people have heard so far, that one is the one…I’m really proud of.” 

She also just gushed about the excitement of the whol whirlwind of activity in the lead-up to the album’s release. ”Being here on this release week with this album and everything, it’s such a group effort,” she said. ”Everything that’s fun about this week. I’m so stoked to have, like, the fans were here camping out overnight, my parents are here.” She also gave props to her dad, Scott, who was out handing out pizza’s to the aforementioned Swifties lined up overnight.

Swift added that she’s also very excited about opening Monday night’s (Aug. 26) MTV 2019 Video Music Awards, a tidbit she wasn’t sure she was supposed to reveal.
