Randy Newman Performs ‘Mr. President’ on ‘Fallon’: ‘It’s Become Relevant Again’

Music

Randy Newman has clearly recovered from hip surgery and he’s fighting fit, if his performance The Tonight Show is anything to go by.

The veteran singer and songwriter Zoomed in for an at-home performance of “Mr. President (Have Pity on the Working Man),” a prescient song from his 1974 album Good Old Boys.

“This is a song I wrote in the pleistocene era,” he says at the top, “but it’s become relevant again.”

The Grammy and Oscar-winning musician always seems to have his finger on the pulse. He recently cut “Stay Away,” a song about staying safe amid the coronavirus pandemic.

Earlier this year, Newman scrapped a string of live concerts due to a longer-than-expected recovery period from a recent operation. With the lockdown forcing us all indoors, he’s clearly used the time to get healthy, and creative.
