In times as unprecedented as these, music fans everywhere are searching for new music to take them out of their reality, even if just for a few minutes. Now, they’re getting another opportunity to do just that, courtesy of pop singer Troye Sivan.
On Wednesday (April 1), Sivan revealed that he wasn’t pranking his fans when he said he had a new song coming and released “Take Yourself Home.” On the new track, the singer takes an acoustic guitar and some progressively ramped-up club beats to confront his own depression, telling himself firmly: “If I’m gonna waste my time, then it’s time to go/ Take yourself home.”
Sivan also released a lyric video to go along with the track, showing the swirling movements of a camera around a large city building, as the lyrics for the song appear superimposed in film over the image. “I’m tired of the city, scream if you’re with me,” he sings on the chorus.
Along with releasing his music, Sivan is also using his platform to promote freelance artists who are losing work due to coronavirus. According to a release, some of the visuals for the lyric video and the song’s pre-save page, along with an exclusive line of T-shirts, were sourced from Instagram artists like Lanning and Jack Taylor Lovatt. All proceeds from the new merch will be donated to the WHO COVID-19 Solidarity Response Fund and Spotify’s COVID-19 Music Relief project.
“’Take Yourself Home’ is one of my favorite songs I’ve ever written,” he said. “The song is kind of a pep talk with yourself and the place you’re from. Grappling with your place in the world. I write these songs as a diary entry, then as life and places change and relationships change, songs can take on a new meaning entirely. Clearly that has happened for this song, with what is going on in the world right now.”
