The Librarian’s ‘Moon Illusion’ Is a Beam of Lunar Light: Exclusive

Music

The Librarian is the demure moniker of West Coast bass music legend Andrea Graham, founder of the revered British Columbia festival Bass Coast and a lauded producer and DJ. Today (March 11), Graham returns with her latest single “Moon Illusion,” premiering exclusively on Billboard Dance.

The song is a sleek cut of half-time bass that has the dark allure of a moonlit night. The track itself is inspired by celestial events, with the idea of “Moon Illusion” coming to Graham on the night of a Wolf Blood Moon, when the full moon appears particularly large. The new song comes on the heels of her 2019 tracks “Invisible” and “Blue Tusk,” and represents the accomplishment of a goal Graham set for herself last year.

“The past decade, I took time off of music production to focus on producing the Bass Coast festival and to tour as a DJ,” Graham tells Billboard Dance. “Last year, I set a goal of returning to music production by releasing three tracks in 12 months that represent who I am now as a DJ and a producer. I wanted to strike a balance of producing music that is both an emotional outlet and fits in my DJ sets. I was drawn to music that has a melodic story but is also gritty with a powerful low end.”

The Librarian will get bodies moving under the moonlight with performances at Bassnectar‘s Deja Voom event in March, California’s Lightning In a Bottle in May and British Columbia’s Shambhala in July.

“Bass music on the West Coast is really exciting right now because there are so many innovative producers in every city,” Graham continues. “Our open-minded scene supports new music. Right now, bass music incorporates influences from so many genres that it’s hard to define, but that’s what makes it fun and exciting because it’s very diverse and in a state of evolution.”

“Moon Illusion” is out tomorrow (March 12). Hear the song one day early below.
