Dune Remake Is a Brutal, Shocking, Scary Nightmare According to Oscar Isaac

Movies

Oscar Isaac has some pretty interesting words to describe Denis Villeneuve’s upcoming Dune remake. It was recently announced that the movie had shifted from its November 20th, 2020 release date to December 18th, 2020. Isaac is currently out promoting The Rise of Skywalker, which opens next week, but he is clearly excited for Dune fans to see what Villeneuve has crafted. Production wrapped on the project back at the end of July and we haven’t seen too many updates, other than the release date change.

Denis Villeneuve’s Dune remake sounds like it really is going to be closer to Frank Herbert’s source material. Fans have been clamoring for a real adaptation on the big screen and Villeneuve has been hard at work trying to make that happen. Oscar Isaac plays Duke Leto Atreides, father of Paul Atreides (Timoth&ée Chalamet), and husband to Lady Jessica (Rebecca Ferguson). He had this to say about the upcoming movie.

“I couldn’t imagine anyone more suited for the tone of the original Frank Herbert novels than Denis. There are some things that are – for lack of a better word – nightmarish about what you see. There’s just this kind of brutalist element to it. It’s shocking. It’s scary. It’s very visceral. And I know that definitely between Denis and myself and Chalamet and Rebecca Ferguson as the family unit, we really searched for the emotion of it. I’m beyond myself with excitement. I think it’s good to feel cool, unique, and special.”

“Nightmarish,” “shocking,” and “scary” all work for Frank Herbert’s Dune. Oscar Isaac is proud of his work on the movie and he’s not done yet. Denis Villeneuve is going back to make at least one more sequel, along with a sister series for the small screen. There’s plenty to explore in the world that Herbert created. Star David Dastmalchian previously said the movie is “true to the spirit” or “honoring the spirit of” the source material as you can get.

Before work started on Dune, Denis Villeneuve declared that he wanted to make Star Wars for adults, which didn’t sit so well with some fans. It would be interesting to get Oscar Isaac’s take on the director’s opinion on the franchise he is currently starring in. Isaac is actually done with the Poe Dameron character on the big screen for now, but he could pop up somewhere else down the line and continue to voice the character on Resistance.

Denis Villeneuve has a lot of pressure to create something that Dune fans will enjoy. Frank Herbert’s source material is a lot to take on, though it sounds like the director was the right person for the job, at least according to Oscar Isaac and David Dastmalchian. The remake is a little over a year away from hitting theaters, so hopefully we’ll get out first tease of footage this spring. For now, we’ll have to wait and see. The interview with Oscar Isaac was originally conducted by Collider.
