Three cargo ships attacked by missiles in Red Sea – as US destroyer shoots down drones

World

The Pentagon has received reports of attacks on an American warship and “multiple” other ships in the Red Sea.

The Pentagon said reports related to its navy destroyer, the USS Carney, as well as commercial vessels.

It potentially marks a major escalation in a series of maritime attacks in the Middle East linked to the Israel-Hamas war.

The Pentagon did not say where it believed the fire came from and said it would release more information as it became available.

It comes after the UK’s Maritime Trade Operations agency said it had received reports of a drone attack in the Red Sea’s Bab el-Mandab strait.

Earlier, it reported drone activity that originated from Yemen, as well as a possible explosion, and called on vessels in the area to be cautious.

A series of attacks have been reported in the Middle Eastern waters since the war broke out between Israel and Hamas.

Last month, an Israeli-linked cargo shop was seized by Houthi militants.

The group is an ally of Iran and controls most of Yemen’s Red Sea coast.

It has previously fired ballistic missiles and armed drones at Israel and vowed to target more Israeli vessels.
