Brie Larson Wraps as Carol Danvers: ‘See You in a Year, Carol’

Movies

The marvelous Brie Larson took to Twitter today, seemingly to announce that she has wrapped filming on The Marvels. Larson plays the superhero Carol Danvers, aka Captain Marvel, in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Last seen in the end credit scene for Shang-Chi and the Legend of Ten Rings, Larson took to Twitter to announce that she’ll next be going higher, further, faster in a year.

Larson, who regularly shares updates about the film via her social media, tweeted out a picture of a director’s chair with the name Carol Danvers on it, draped over the chair is one of the actress’s notorious comfy red, white, and blue sweater. The picture was tweeted out along with a message, saying, “See you in a year, Carol. ✴️”

However, rather than usual excitement over a Larson update about The Marvels, the actress’s comments are being flooded with comments about her recent decision to update her profile picture to a non-fungible token, commonly referred to as NFTs, by Moscow-based illustrator Varvara Alay. Although many in silicone valley view NFTs as the next frontier in art collecting, many in the fine arts and comic book community believe the endeavor is just one more way to cut creators out of the money making part of the process. And so far, those artists seem to be right.

Larson’s announcement seems to confirm that production has wrapped for The Marvels, or at least production on her scenes. Produced by Marvel Studios and distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures, The Marvels is the upcoming sequel to 2019’s Captain Marvel and a continuation of Monica Rambeau’s (Teyonah Parris) story from WandaVision. The film will also pick up where 2022’s Ms. Marvel about Kamala Khan, aka Ms. Marvel, played by newcomer Iman Vellani, will leave off, which makes sense since the young Khan looks up to Captain Marvel (in the comics, the character even has a fan club centered around the Marvel hero).

The film is directed by Nia DaCosta (Candyman, Little Woods) from a screenplay by Megan McDonnell (WandaVision). Second unit filming began on 31st MCU film, which is part of Phase Four, in mid-April 2021 in New Jersey, and principal photography began in August 2021, taking place at the famous Pinewood Studios in Buckinghamshire, England, as well as in Tropea, Italy, and Los Angeles, California. Under the current Marvel Studios release schedule, The Marvels is scheduled to be released on February 17th, 2023, and Larson promises that she is just getting started as Captain Marvel.
