Halle Berry is rooting for Zoe Kravitz in The Batman, passing on the whip and claws from one Catwoman to another. Previously, Berry led her own Catwoman standalone film that imagined the superhero in a world without Batman or any other DC personalities. The film came up short with critics and at the box office, though it firmly established Berry’s place in DC history as one of the performers to bring that role to life.
Now, Kravitz will get her chance to crack the whip in The Batman by playing a new version of Selina Kyle opposite Robert Pattinson’s Bruce Wayne. Fans have gotten to see some sneak peeks at this new Catwoman through the teasers, posters, and other promotional materials. It’s enough to get Berry excited as well, as the actress recently explained to Pop Culture how confident she is in Kravitz nailing the part.
“Just be courageous and bring her own interpretation to the role. I think she’s going to be an amazing Catwoman. And I can’t wait to see what her interpretation of that is.”
Lee Meriwether was one of the first actresses to play a live-action Catwoman by taking on the role in the original Batman film in 1966. Michelle Pfeiffer played a new version of Catwoman in Tim Burton’s Batman Returns in 1992 before Berry later took over with her standalone movie in 2004. Anne Hathaway would play Catwoman in Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight Trilogy with her appearance as Selina Kyle in 2012’s The Dark Knight Rises.
The Batman Also Serves As An Origin Story For Catwoman
The Batman is, at heart, a movie about the Dark Knight, given its title. However, Zoe Kravitz has suggested that Catwoman has a rather sizable presence in the film. She has also explained that The Batman serves as an origin story for her new Selina Kyle, something that has been touched on the previous trailers.
“This is an origin story for Selina,” Kravitz told Empire. “So, it’s the beginning of her figuring out who she is, beyond just someone trying to survive. I think there’s a lot of space to grow and I think we are watching her become what I’m sure will be the femme fatale.”
Of her physical training for the role of the cat burglar, Kravitz added: “We watched cats and lions and how they fight, and talked about what is actually possible when you’re my size, and Batman’s so much stronger than me. What is my skill? It’s being fast and tricky. So we did some really interesting floor work that incorporated different kinds of martial arts and capoeira and a kind of feline, dance-like movement.”
Matt Reeves directs The Batman using a screenplay co-written with Peter Craig. The film star Robert Pattinson and Zoe Kravitz as well as Paul Dano as The Riddler, Colin Farrell as Oswald Cobblepot, Andy Serkis as Alfred Pennyworth, and Jeffrey Wright as Jim Gordon. The Batman will be released in movie theaters on March 4, 2022.
