Blue Beetle Star Xolo Maridueña Has Tried On the Costume, Says it Looks Awesome

Cobra Kai star Xolo Maridueña has revealed that not only has he seen the superhero suit he’ll be wearing in the upcoming DC flick Blue Beetle, but he has even tried it on. Development on the movie, which will see the young actor take up the mantle of the Blue Beetle for the character’s silver screen debut, is now underway, though, according to Maridueña, who discussed the movie recently with USA Today, the costume designers are hoping he will put on some timber before leaping into action.

“We’ve done two suit fittings. They’re hoping that I get more buff by the time we actually start filming. But I’ve seen the suit, and it looks awesome.”

Xolo Maridueña’s star is now on the rise thanks to his starring role as karate protégé Miguel Diaz in Netflix’s hugely popular series, Cobra Kai, with Blue Beetle set to launch him into the Hollywood stratosphere. Not only is the role of Blue Beetle a big step forward for the actor’s career, it is also a major step forward in terms of representation, with Maridueña honored to be playing such a substantial part.

“Honestly, it feels like I’ve skipped a few stepping stones. “Cobra Kai” has been such a wonderful opportunity, (and) it feels a little bit intimidating being this is my first movie and it’s in a realm that’s totally different than anything I’ve ever worked on. I’m nervous, but I’m excited. It’s gonna be important, not only for Latinos and to see people of color, brown people, represented onscreen, but also show a story that we haven’t really seen before.”

So far, all that has been revealed from the movie is concept art of the titular superhero. Sporting a wonderfully comic book accurate costume, DC fans surely cannot wait to see a slightly more bulky Xolo Maridueña take on the role. Not much else has yet been revealed regarding the plot details of Blue Beetle, but we do know that the DC movie will focus on Jaime Reyes, the third person to take up the title of the Blue Beetle mantle. Created in 2005 by comic book superstars Keith Giffen and Cully Hamner alongside Hollywood screenwriter John Rogers, and much like the Blue Beetles before him, Reyes gains his powers after discovering a “sacred scarab”, which attaches to his back and morphs into a battle suit allowing him to fight crime and travel in space.

The relaunch of the Blue Beetle character with Jamie Reyes, a Mexican-American teenager, under the blue armor proved to be one of DC’s most successful new launches in decades, with this iteration of the character having since featured in multiple comic book runs and animated shows, as well as appearing in live-action form on the small screen in Superman prequel series, Smallville.

Directed by Angel Manuel Soto from a screenplay written by Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer Blue Beetle will be a part of the DC Cinematic Universe. While the project was initially intended to be released as an HBO Max exclusive, it was revealed back in December that the Blue Beetle movie will now debut in theaters in 2023.
