Zack Snyder has unveiled the first concept art for his next directorial venture, Rebel Moon. The Man of Steel director took to his Vero account to share a picture based on the initial concept for the upcoming sci-fi thriller, which Snyder will also co-write. Snyder also confirmed that his production team is ready to enter the first stages of principal photography for Rebel Moon in a few months.
The graphic image, which reflected Snyder’s signature use of dark colors and shady lighting, shows an army of strange-looking warriors carrying weapons, as well as some raised structures having coded inscriptions engraved in them. Attached to the picture, Snyder wrote in the caption:
Rebel Moon concept art… we are in full swing heading towards principal photography in a few months.
Rebel Moon follows a young woman sent across the galaxy to find and recruit warriors to fight and suppress the armies of tyrannous Belisarius. However, the official synopsis coming from the studio is yet to be released. The film will see Zack Snyder reunite with Shay Hatten, who co-wrote Army of the Dead and Army of Thieves with Snyder, both of which marked Snyder’s new collaboration with Netflix. Hatten has also co-written Chad Stahleski’s John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum. Also co-writing Rebel Moon is Kurt Johnstad who wrote Snyder’s 300 Series and has also written Atomic Blonde. Like most of Snyder’s projects, his wife, Deborah Snyder will join him in the project in the Producer’s capacity.
Though Snyder is yet to reveal the full cast of Rebel Moon, The Mummy (2017) star Sofia Boutella will lead the film. Earlier, Snyder had compared Rebel Moon to be his tribute to his favorite sci-fi films such as Star Wars as well as his inspiration Akira Kurosawa. Apparently, Rebel Moon was spawned from a scrapped script Snyder had come up with for George Lucas’ fan-favorite franchise. He said,
This is me growing up as an Akira Kurosawa fan, a Star Wars fan; This is me growing up as an Akira Kurosawa fan, a Star Wars fan. It’s my love of sci-fi and a giant adventure. My hope is that this also becomes a massive IP and a universe that can be built out… I’ve spent the last two or three years building out this universe. Every corner has to be painted in. I’ve been doing designs, constantly drawing, and really cultivating its fertile ground to make this world fully realized.
2021 was quite a year for Zack Snyder, which started with a massive fan and critical success of both of his versions of Justice League’s Snyder Cut (including Justice Is Gray Edition), as well as positive reception for Army of the Dead, which has spawned a franchise of its own. His 2022 will probably begin with his animated series Army of the Dead: Lost Vegas, which shall act as a companion series to Army of the Dead, and will see various actors from the latter returning to voice their respective characters. There’s no official release date for Rebel Moon as of yet; however, the film might only see a release in early 2023. Snyder would further write and direct the Army of the Dead sequel Planet of the Dead.
