Marvel fans are known for getting a little overexcited at times, and the wave of elation that many are riding at the moment on the back of the release of Spider-Man: No Way Home is one that has everyone even more expectant than normal. When Andrew Garfield’s Spider-Man stunt double made a comment online in response to a fan congratulating him on “getting the call for ASM3” thanking them for their words, the Marvel fan base erupted in a webby explosion of belief that Andrew Garfield was finally getting his own solo Spider-Man movie, probably in Sony’s universe to face Tom Hardy’s Venom. However, those dreams were soon crushed when William Spencer – the stunt double in question – returned to his Instagram account to clarify his comment, which it seems was all taken in the wrong context.
In a pretty direct message, Spencer responded to the Twitter post made by @TASMFELICIA, which shared the original conversation with the stunt double and said “ANDREW GARFIELD’S STUNTMAN JUST CONFIRMED TASM 3?!!! WE KEEP WINNING.” In his follow up on Instagram, Spencer made it clear that he knows nothing about whether there will or won’t be a new Spider-Man adventure for Andrew Garfield, but he doesn’t want people using his name to promote rumors. His full comment read:
“This is a MISUNDERSTANDING . I thought this fan was talking the current movie and was abbreviating and I didn’t read carefully enough, I apologize for that. I answered a lot of congratulations messages about the movie that just came out and I was trying to write all the fans back to make sure they knew I appreciated their excitement over No Way Home not over any new project. Once again I KNOW NOTHING ABOUT ANY NEW SPIDER-MAN MOVIE WITH ANDREW GARFIELD. I AM GLAD THE FANS ARE SO EXCITED BUT PLEASE DO NOT ASSUME THINGS THAT ARE NOT TRUE THEN PUT THEM ON ME.”
From pretty much the moment the first images of Andrew Garfield on the set of Spider-Man: No Way Home were leaked, months before his appearance in the movie was actually confirmed, fans began calling for him to take on Venom in Sony’s side of the Marvel universe, with additional rumors speculating that both Garfield and fellow former Spider-Man star Tobey Maguire are both wanted as part of the MCU’s expected “Endgame-level” event movie of Secret Wars sometime in the future. With this in mind, and as Spencer noted with fans as excited as they have ever been about Spider-Man, it is not surprising that the stunt performer’s words were taken in the way they were considering he responded to a post specifically about The Amazing Spider-Man 3 rather than Andrew Garfield’s third appearance as the hero as the took it to mean.
All in all, many movie studios have recently tapped into the money-spinning potential of giving fans what they want and Sony have been pretty much at the front of the queue for fan-pleasing with their recently release of Ghostbusters: Afterlife as well as their hand in Spider-Man: No Way Home. The question now is, will they act on Spider-Man’s currently elevated profile and give fans what they are asking again, or will they be happy to sit back and simply collect the rewards of their current endeavors? It looks like fans will have to maybe wait for an official stance on the matter before getting too enthralled by social media speculation.
