Latin Artist on the Rise: How Underground Regional Mexican Act Grupo Firme Landed on the Billboard Charts

“We had to record music that way … throwing a party, with no planning, spontaneous, and it worked for us,” lead vocalist Eduin Caz tells Billboard. “‘Juro Por Dios,’ ‘Ni El Dinero, Ni Nada,’ and ‘Pideme’ were our first couple of songs that went viral. It was like magic. People sing our songs and recognize us in the streets, and that’s worth gold.”

As of 2017, Grupo Firme is under the management of Isael Gutierrez, who’s at the helm of record label Music VIP Entertainment. Now, Grupo Firme is on the radar — still spontaneous as ever — but exporting their music internationally.

On the Billboard charts, the group has six entries on Regional Mexican Airplay, five entries on Hot Latin Songs, and six entries on Latin Airplay. The Lenin Ramirez-assisted “Yo Ya No Vuelvo Contigo” hit Top 10 on both Hot Latin Songs and Latin Airplay and peaked at No. 1 on the Regional Mexican Airplay chart dated June 6, 2020.

Currently, Grupo Firme is making the rounds with their single “Enloqueceme,” which is a clever banda-pop version of the OV7 classic, performed by Caz’s brother and second vocalist of the group, Johnny Caz. They’re also making waves with innovative pop-urban collaborations that were born this year, including works with Reik, Carin Leon, C-Kan, and JD Pantoja to name a few.

“Everything happened so fast, but we are doing our fusions with other genres, and people have accepted it,” Caz says. “Yes, we sing Regional Mexican, but our sound is very versatile. We make music not to compete, but to share. That’s how I describe Grupo Firme.”

Major Accomplishment: ”We’ve had a lot, especially everything that has happened in our career this year,” shares Caz. “But I think one of our biggest ones has been able to sell-out Rodeo Texcoco. We’re the only artists, in its 22-year history, to fill the venue with more than 33,000 people. We also did a sold-out pre-sale at the Staples Center in only one month, and we had to open a second date.”

What’s Next: ”We’re coming with everything in 2021. We have a studio album with brand new songs. Espinoza Paz, Eden Muñoz (Calibre 50), Horacio Palencia, and many more will form part of it,” Caz reveals. “If things calm down with the pandemic, we also have a tentative tour kicking off in the U.S. in March. With the help of our manager, we also plan to have a professional strategy for our upcoming releases.”
