Does Black Widow’s White Suit Hint at the Return of a Major Marvel Character?

Movies

The first Black Widow trailer has finally arrived. Marvel recently unveiled the first footage from the highly-anticipated Marvel Cinematic Universe entry, which will finally provide Scarlett Johansson’s Natasha Romanoff with a much-deserved solo movie. And, as we can see in the trailer, Natasha will be getting a few new looks, perhaps most notably a fancy new white suit. But does this particular look carry with it some additional meaning?

Warning: possible spoilers ahead for Black Widow. Granted, this is speculation based on stuff that we see in the trailer, which also includes a first look at Taskmaster along with our first fully realized reveal of David Harbour in the Red Guardian costume. But just in case it turns out to be right, those who want to go into the movie clean should turn back now. That aside, there is at least a chance this new suit hints at the return of none other than the Winter Soldier. And likely not the good guy Bucky Barnes who helped the Avengers defeat Thanos.

To understand why that might be the case, we need to turn to the pages of Marvel Comics. Natasha’s white suit made its debut in the pages of Black Widow: Deadly Origin in 2010, around the time Scarlett Johansson joined the MCU in 2010. In the miniseries, she must encounter many figures from her past when her father figure Ivan comes under attack. Here’s the synopsis for the story.

“When the mysterious ‘Icepick Protocol,’ suddenly strikes at her beloved father figure, the stakes of Natalia’s dangerous work become even higher. With this mysterious conspiracy threatening everyone she loves, the Black Widow must untangle the decades of treachery and betrayal that have plagued her life since childhood. Racing around the globe, Natalia must confront former lovers and allies including Daredevil, Hawkeye, Hercules, Nick Fury and the new Captain America. But even with powerful allies like this, can she act quick enough to prevent her past from destroying her future? “

The new Captain America, in this case, was Bucky, aka the Winter Soldier. But how might that translate to the MCU? Well, what we know for sure, thanks to Captain America: The Winter Soldier, is that Natasha previously had a run-in with the Winter Soldier during his days as a secret Hydra weapon. We already know Black Widow is going to be a prequel that will include flashbacks. Could it be that we’ll see the famed encounter unfold? We certainly can’t rule it out. For what it’s worth, Marvel’s Bill Rosemann took to Twitter to confirm the suit does come from Deadly Origin.

“Yep, it’s from Black Widow: Deadly Origin #2, edited by Yours Truly. A variant cover was requested, so I asked the amazing Adi Granov to take his regular cover & change Natasha’s signature suit to white. Paul Cornell & Tom Raney also worked it into the story!”

Sebastian Stan isn’t confirmed to appear as Bucky/Winter Soldier in the movie. But Marvel does like to surprise fans when they can, so who knows? Black Widow, which is directed by Cate Shortland, is set to hit theaters on May 1, 2020, from Disney and Marvel.
