The FashionBeans Grooming Awards 2019

Style

When it comes to male grooming, we’ve never had it so good. Dubious marketing jargon has been replaced by science-backed credentials, which means that a healthy portion of what’s on offer now actually does what it says on the tin.

As a result, the bathroom shelf business is booming: personal care is now a multi-billion-pound global enterprise, with men responsible for an ever-growing portion of all toiletry sales. On the plus side, that means fresher faces and flyer fades, but it also means more duds to sift through. That’s why FashionBeans has its annual Grooming Awards.

Every year, our team of editors and panel of expert judges spends months tirelessly scrubbing, shaving, slathering and spraying to unearth the very best gear released over the last year. Some ask for just loose change and offer powerhouse results in return, while others well and truly justify their top-tier price tag. But all do enough to stand out in a crowded market and deliver performance that will help you look, smell and feel your best, without breaking a sweat.

Win Over £1,000 Of Award-Winning Grooming Products

To celebrate the FashionBeans Grooming Awards 2019, we’re giving away a box containing a selection of the winning and highly commended products, worth more than £1,000.

To be in with a chance of taking this home, follow @FashionBeansCom on Instagram, like the FashionBeans Grooming Awards post and comment tagging the best-groomed man you know.

BEST EVERYDAY FRAGRANCE

Moschino Toy BoyMolton Brown Geranium & Nefertum

Winner: Moschino Toy Boy

Typical fragrances are built on a pyramid of ingredients. Today, Italian fashion house Moschino is anything but typical, so is it any surprise that its new move-over, look-at-me fragrance for 2019 is built on the olfactory scaffolding of a… teddy bear?

Scent stalwarts bergamot and Haitian vetiver are masterfully blended with Indonesian nutmeg, clove, pear tree, rose, magnolia and Ambermax to form a fragrance so winning it practically marched up and grabbed the title for itself.

Ian Taylor: “The bear’s not your usual aftershave bottle, but it actually looks pretty cool out of the bathroom and on the bookshelf instead. Wear it, and it’ll be the first thing people compliment.”

Highly Commended: Molton Brown Geranium & Nefertum

A year rarely goes by without Molton Brown bagging an award, and for good reason. The brand has been in the business of making fragrance heavy-hitters for nearly 50 years, and this year it achieved the seemingly impossible by creating a highly wearable scent that works day to night, all-year-round, rightfully earning it a place in this year’s awards.

BEST MOISTURISER

ClarinsMen Super Moisture BalmClinique For Men Maximum Hydrator

Winner: ClarinsMen Super Moisture Balm

Clarins knew it was on to a good thing when it released not one but a trio of new moisturisers for men this year. Sitting between a richer cream and the lighter fluids on the market, the brand’s transparent and non-greasy Super Moisture Balm just pipped the other two to the post, offering up an impossible to beat year-round, all-weather solution that’s just, well, super.

Dr Tijion Esho: “This is an ultra-smooth non-greasy balm that soothes instantly on impact due to the organic ingredients in its base such as bison grass, which is known for its soothing properties.”

Highly Commended: Clinique For Men Maximum Hydrator

Forget snake oil, Clinique’s newest moisture cream is packing some serious face-based science. The Maximum Hydrator solution doesn’t just quench your face from the outside, it redistributes moisture between all layers of the dermis, training skin to keep itself hydrated. Pretty cool, right?

BEST RAZOR

Gillette SkinGuard RazorBolin Webb X1 Matte Razor

Winner: Gillette SkinGuard Razor

After years leading the bathroom arms race to add more blades to razors, Gillette has finally taken things back to basics. The brand’s SkinGuard innovation uses two precisely distanced, shock-absorbing blades set either side of a mount guard, which not only lifts the hairs ready to cut, but also regulates pressure from hand to skin and holds the skin smooth between cuts.

Which makes perfect sense when you think about it – fewer blades, less tug on the hair. A saviour for those prone to stubble rash and skin irritation.

Mark Maciver: “Definitely the best a man can get.”

Highly Commended: Bolin Webb X1 Matte Razor

Inspired by the design of an Aston Martin, it’s not difficult to see why Bolin Webb’s X1 Matte Razor was so popular with our judging panel. Granted, it won’t be the lightest touch on the wallet, but don’t look at it as just something to shave with, this is a piece of design kit you’ll enjoy having in your bathroom for some time.

BEST NEW GROOMING BRAND

Manual Mens Grooming

Winner: Manual

Erections on demand. Now that we’ve got your attention, it’s time to introduce you to Manual. One of a new breed of wellness-slash-healthcare brands, the London-based firm launched this year poised for battle against British men’s body-related bugbears.

Alongside its delivered-to-you treatment programmes for hair loss and erectile dysfunction, its line of grooming products are so well-designed and effective, it consists of just three products. A standalone shampoo made of caffeine, biotin and saw palmetto; and two moisturisers – one for the morning and one for the night.

In a crowded space, the brand’s approach is truly refreshing. If you travel a lot and don’t want to lug your whole bathroom around with you or just find sticking to a complex skincare routine for very long a bit of struggle, give Manual’s system a go.

BEST EVENING FRAGRANCE

Paco Rabanne Pure XS NightIssey Miyake L'Eau D'Issey Pour Homme Wood & Wood

Winner: Paco Rabanne Pure XS Night

Even if we could afford to douse ourselves in a super expensive whiff every day, we don’t have to. Mainly because Paco Rabanne continues to serve up killer scents.

Following in the impeccably suited steps of 1Million and Invictus, Pure XS Night is a heady concoction of sharp ginger and ginseng poised against warm and rich cinnamon, cacao and vanilla all on a stage of caramel. We’re starting to wonder if these guys know how not to make a blockbuster fragrance.

Oliver Proudlock: “I love the warmth of this fragrance, and the subtle leather finish. Perfect for the evening.”

Highly Commended: Issey Miyake L’Eau D’Issey Wood & Wood

Having launched close to 100 editions of L’Eau d’Issey since 1992, it’s safe to assume the folks at Issey Miyake know what they’re doing. This year’s update defies convention and sticks bold wood notes bang in the middle of the juice as well as at their traditional position at the base. Rather than an overbearingly earthy hit, expect a scent that’s like a warm summer evening stroll through the forest thanks to an injection of grapefruit.

BEST BEARD TRIMMER

Remington Heritage Fold Out TrimmerBraun BT5060 Beard Trimmer

Winner: Remington Heritage Fold Out Trimmer

Fellas, we’ve come a long way from using clamshells to tweeze hairs from our face (ouch). These days, we’ve got gadgets like the compact Fold Out Trimmer from the Remington Heritage line. This handsome piece of kit saw off its standalone beard trimmer competition on the basis it also offers precise grooming for neck contours, brows, ears, edging and other generally tricky bits.

Ruth Newman: “This is a really great trimmer, efficient to use and nice packaging.”

Highly Commended: Braun BT5060 Beard Trimmer

Something that looks good, is easy to clean and delivers consistent cutting is all we ask from a beard trimmer. And yet, it’s amazing that so many brands can’t get the basics right. Thank the barbering gods at Braun, then, for its latest device. Like all trimmers, we have no idea what the model numbers actually mean, but we can tell you that this one ticks all the boxes.

BEST CLEANSER/EXFOLIATOR

Baxter of California Clay Mask AHADr Dennis Gross Professional Grade Resurfacing Liquid Peel

Winner: Baxter of California Clay Mask AHA

With men finally taking self-care seriously, it’s unsurprising that out of all the foamy washes, polishing scrubs, deep-pore de-cloggers and chemical resurfacers in this category, it was a mask that proved most popular with the judges.

Behind Baxter of California’s no-nonsense branding is all the key players to make you look refreshed and healthy, from kaolin and clay to draw out dirt and oil to hydrating calendula, and aloe leaf juice and sugar acids AHAs to buff away dead skin.

Ruth Newman: “This product is light although purifying, is easy to wash off and you get a visible difference after just one application.”

Highly Commended: Dr Dennis Gross Professional Grade Resurfacing Liquid Peel

It’s Dr Dennis Gross’s 25-year career as an internationally-renowned dermatologist and surgeon that has paved the way for this eponymous range of skincare. Making available all his years of experience and knowledge to you at home with professional-grade formulas is what has set his products – including this two-step rejuvenating and anti-ageing peel – ahead of so many others.

BEST ANTI-AGEING PRODUCT

La Roche Posay Pure Vitamin C10 SerumKiehl's Cannabis Sativa Seed Oil Herbal Concentrate

Winner: La Roche-Posay Pure Vitamin C10 Serum

We all grew up being told to take our vitamins, but did you know that vitamin C is 20 times more effective for skin health when applied topically?

There’s a reason by La Roche-Posay is the pharmacist’s favourite – take the time to put a few drops of the French brand’s water-like serum on in the morning before an SPF moisturiser, and you’ll see markedly improved mug across wrinkle appearance, imperfections and even skin tone.

Chris Brown: “This serum is a lifesaver for anyone who travels on long-haul flights. The ingredients completely transform dry, dull and dehydrated skin.”

Highly Commended: Kiehl’s Cannabis Sativa Seed Oil Herbal Concentrate

More than just an anti-ageing solution, this all-natural, seed-based, super lightweight oil can be used to treat a range of skin complaints from dryness and irritation to blemishes. While the cannabis component is not the variety that’ll give you a buzz, it boasts all the calming and soothing benefits you see from the hemp plant.

BEST ECO-INNOVATION

Gillette x TerraCycle National Razor Recycling Programme

Winner: Gillette x TerraCycle National Razor Recycling Programme

Razors – with bits we all use, lose, throw away, replace and repeat – aren’t the first thing to come to mind when talking about products that don’t cost the earth. However, over the last 12 months Gillette has stepped up, launching not one but two groundbreaking eco developments.

The brand has partnered with recycling giant TerraCycle to ensure all razor heads, blades and disposables are now fully recyclable, but it has also overhauled the packaging across its best-selling Mach3, Fusion, SkinGuard and Proglide lines, making them 100 per cent plastic-free. Clean shave, clean earth.

Ian Taylor: “It’s all of our responsibility, both as brands and consumers, to extend the life of single-use products and this partnership sets a new benchmark for the industry.”

BEST DEODORANT

Sure Men Advanced Protection Extreme Dry Anti-Perspirant DeodorantDove Men+Care Sport Active Fresh Antiperspirant Deodorant

Winner: Sure Men Advanced Protection Anti-Perspirant Deodorant

When it comes to tackling the shop shelves for everyday essentials like deodorant, guys want two things – products that do what they say on the tin, and products that do it well. Throw on top of that a disarming price, and you’ve got a winner.

Oh, and if aerosols aren’t for you, SureMen has got you covered – the same 72-hour protection also comes in a handy roll-on. Win, win.

Oliver Proudlock: “This deodorant is epic. It smells good as well as keeping you fresh throughout the day. Even if you are constantly on the move, as well as working out.”

Highly Commended: Dove Men+Care Sport Active Fresh Antiperspirant

With a reputation that precedes the brand for good-quality men’s essentials, pharmacy store titan Dove Men+Care proved once again with its Active Fresh Antiperspirant that you don’t need to pay top dollar for top-shelf quality.

THE ESSENTIAL KIT AWARD

Medik8 For Men CSA Philosophy KitAlphascience Phytic [TC] Rejuvenate & Glow Serum

Winner: Medik8 For Men CSA Philosophy Kit

The holy grail of grooming comes in the form of products that deliver solid results without demanding too much time out of our lives. The CSA Philosophy Kit by Medik8 hones in on just a few of the most key skincare ingredients, chiefly vitamin C, vitamin A and retinol. From there, it applies them to an untaxing three-step regimen that will make your face healthier, stronger and ready to take on the fight against gravity.

Ian Taylor: “With a toddler and a newborn at home, I’m guilty myself of sloping off my grooming routine. When something comes along that takes the hard work out of it, I’m sold.”

Highly Commended: Alphascience Phytic [TC] Rejuvenate & Glow Serum

Despite being new to the UK this year, cosmeceutical brand Alphascience has been hard at work in the skincare labs of France for 25 years. As such, they’re crashing into the grooming market here with some serious weight behind them. If you’re not already on board with serums, you’ll want to add this one into your morning routine stat.

BEST EYE CREAM

Heath Eye SerumFilorga NCEF-Reverse Eyes

Winner: Heath Eye Serum

Every man needs a solid go-to for disguising candle-burning nights and mornings stashed away in his desk drawer. We knew father-son brand Heath wouldn’t disappoint, and we’ve been won over by this do-it-all roll-on. It targets the eye area with silk tree extract and hyaluronic acid, and the instant refreshing effect means it practically eats dark circles for breakfast. Keep it in the fridge for added “ahhh” on application.

Chris Brown: “This is my new favourite product. The cooling rollerball makes it
very easy to apply around the eye area. The first thing I reach for in the morning.”

Highly Commended: Filorga NCEF-Reverse Eyes

Hyaluronic acid, collagen, vitamin C and caffeine – no one good has been left out of the party. Not invited: puffiness, dark circles, wrinkles and loss of firmness. The host with the most is NCEF, Filorgas medical-grade complex of 50 vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and amino-acids with the power to prevent, halt and actually reverse visible signs of ageing at home.

BEST SECRET WEAPON

Spotlight White Teeth WashRen Clean Skincare Non-Drying Spot Treatment

Winner: Spotlight White Teeth Wash

Our editors and judges were floored with the results of this daily mouthwash. And only slightly furious at all the money they’d wasted on those big bucks whitening treatments. Designed by dentists, a careful level of hydrogen peroxide safely whitens while active seaweed particles (AKA tooth decay’s new worst enemy) bolsters oral health. A million-dollar smile for pocket-change, we’re sold.

James Harknett: “Like a good tan and tidy eyebrows, the impact a bright smile can have on your overall look is often underestimated. This packs a serious punch.”

Highly Commended: Ren Clean Skincare Non-Drying Spot Treatment

Don’t let your dopp kit be without Ren’s emergency spot solver. The secret to this little weapon is prebiotics, which actively rebalance the live bacteria on the skin, stopping breakouts and preventing future ones. That big occasion, huge presentation, hot date – not a problem.

BEST GROOMING DESTINATION

Beast London House Of Fraser

Winner: Beast + Frasers and Flannels

With a mission to change the way men buy beauty, it’s no surprise that grooming business Beast is continuing to shake up the retail market. Its latest move marks the very first time a national department store – in this case, Frasers, the luxury mini-chain from House of Fraser, and Flannels – has offered a dedicated men’s experience that extends beyond a section of shelf within the sea of women’s cosmetics.

As of November Beast is be rolling out store-in-store concepts across both retailers nation-wide. Watch this space.

Highly Commended: Acqua di Parma Barbiere At Selfridges

There isn’t a man out there who doesn’t love how slick Acqua di Parma’s products look in the bathroom. So imagine being able to step into a world as refined as the fragrance brand’s iconic bottles. Now you can, thanks to the bosses at Selfridges who thought it only fair to bring a little slice of the good life to London by way of an in-store traditional Italian barbershop

BEST LUXURY FRAGRANCE

Dunhill Moroccan AmberBottega Veneta Illusione For Him

Winner: Dunhill Moroccan Amber

Part of the British brand’s new Signature Collection, Dunhill Moroccan Amber is one of those fragrances your nose will keep picking up throughout the day, causing you to think “what’s that amazing smell?” only before realising time and time again “oh, that’s me.”

To describe the blend of cardamom, saffron and amber just doesn’t do it justice, making it hard to convey just why this scent proved such a hit with our judges and editors. Just go straight to the shelf, pick up a bottle and run, don’t walk, out of that store to your new, better-smelling life.

Dr Tijion Esho: “A truly exotic, rich and spicy fragrance. The combination of cardamom and saffron as key ingredients complete the delivery of bottled luxury.”

Highly Commended: Bottega Veneta Illusione For Him

Just as with its menswear collections, impossibly superior craftsmanship and exquisite presentation are par for the course with a Bottega Veneta fragrance. Illusione For Him is an uncomplicated mix of men’s scent favourites, but it’s how the concentration has been carefully considered and thoughtfully balanced that makes it so attractive.

BEST SHAVER

Philips Series 6000 Wet And Dry Electric ShaverRemington Heritage Wet and Dry Foil Shaver

Winner: Philips Series 6000 Wet And Dry Electric Shaver

When it comes to felling facial forestry, Philips has been a market leader for just about as long as most men can remember. The Series 6000 Wet and Dry Electric Shaver is yet just another gleaming example of why. Years of research and expertise are how the brand continues to offer an outstanding close-shave, even with an electric rotary. Add to that an automatic cleaning dock and looking good has never been so easy.

Ian Taylor: “I don’t need much convincing when it comes to Philips shavers, but it’s this year’s addition of the Smartclean system – something like a robot vacuum cleaner for your shaver – that clinched it for me.”

Highly Commended: Remington Heritage Wet and Dry Foil Shaver

It was Remington that brought the first electric shaver into the world in 1937, and this year the brand dug back into its archive to show why it’s a true design classic. More than eight decades on, and now loaded with the latest technology, this is one for the grooming hall of fame.

BEST HAIRCARE SOLUTION

Mr Jamie Stevens Fibre WaxAmerican Crew Acumen Daily Thickening Shampoo

Winner: Mr Jamie Stevens Fibre Wax

The youngest person to ever be nominated for the title ‘British Hairdresser of the Year’, Jamie Stevens takes a two-pronged approach with his hair products, giving body to each strand with a signature thickening fibre complex and nourishing from within with keratin and pea peptides. Hold is strong, finish is matte, confidence is set.

James Harknett: “Even if hair fullness isn’t a concern for you, this is a great product for trying out new styles or doing something for a special occasion.”

Highly Commended: American Crew Acumen Daily Thickening Shampoo

This shampoo from styling experts American Crew does what so many other brands and products overlook – cleanse and treat the scalp as well as the hair. By removing dirt and product build-up, hair follicles are opened, resulting in thicker, stronger strands. All that just by switching your shampoo – it’s a no-brainer, really.

BEST MAKE-UP PRODUCT

House 99 All Bright Natural Bronzing Effect MoisturiserMarc Jacobs Accomplice Concealer & Touch-Up Stick

Winner: House 99 All Bright Natural Bronzing Effect Moisturiser

Tanning products needn’t leave you red-faced or smelling like a dry old Hobnob. This beard-friendly gel formulation from David Beckham’s House 99 brand has a light guide colour so you can see where it’s been applied. Simply top up when needed to get Becks’ “just back from a few days in the Miami” look.

James Harknett: “There isn’t a new tanning formula or product I haven’t seen and the thing I always look for is ease of use. This daily moisturiser is the first in a while that’s really delivered that, which is particularly impressive from a non-tanning brand.”

Highly Commended: Marc Jacobs Accomplice Concealer & Touch-Up Stick

Never has a product been more aptly named. Marc Jacobs’ unisex concealer is the ultimate bathroom wingman. Capable of banishing bags, ridding redness and shifting spots out of eye line, it’s like Photoshop for your face.

BEST GROOMING TREATMENT

Winner: Ted’s Grooming Room Ultimate VIP

Ultimate treat, ultimate relaxation, ultimate re-charge. This hour and a half session at Ted’s Grooming Room is the ultimate grooming reset comprising a facial, hot towel shave or beard groom, haircut, and brow-tidy.

Carried out in a private barbering room (complete with fully-stocked bar, no less), it’s the addition of Ted’s signature argan oil and clay face mask and upper body massage, however, that makes this a truly indulgent experience. Ten minutes in and you’ll forget about the day’s to-do list and your iPhone waiting for you at the end of the session.

Highly Commended: iS Clinical Fire and Ice LED Facial At The Ned

Venture beneath the inner-city buzz of The Ned’s ground floor at London’s Bank to find an oasis of calm in its spa. Here you’ll find a whole menu of specialist treatments for skin, body and wellbeing, like the iS Clinical Fire and Ice LED facial, which involves a fiery peel using the iS Clinical resurfacing mask followed by a cooling rejuvenating mask.

BEST SHAMPOO/CONDITIONER

Hims ShampooAveda Rosemary Mint Purifying Shampoo

Winner: Hims Shampoo

Unlike death and taxes, hair loss doesn’t have to be a fact of life. The signature shampoo from confidence-enhancing healthcare company Hims uses saw palmetto, a plant extract heralded for its ability to reduce DHT – the hormone guilty of causing everything from receding hairlines to bald patches.

In line with one of the brand’s core principles that prevention is better than remedy, use it regularly to build strength and hair health. Instant confidence, just add water.

Dr Tijion Esho: “Hints of peppermint and tea tree are welcome additions in making the fight against male pattern baldness not just look good but smell great too.”

Highly Commended: Aveda Rosemary Mint Purifying Shampoo

Aveda’s newest shampoo is a city-dweller’s dream. Rosemary, peppermint, spearmint and white vinegar make for a powerful combination that naturally purifies your mane, ridding you of the day’s pollution and grime.

BEST GROOMING GADGET

Dr Dennis Gross SpotLite Blemish ReducerStylSmile Teeth Whitening Toothbrush Kit

Winner: Dr Dennis Gross SpotLite Blemish Reducer

LED skincare has been rising in popularity for some time now. Not surprising when you discover the full face masks make you look like a well-groomed Robocop. This at-home gadget from Dr Dennis Gross is a first, harnessing the power of blue light therapy to banish acne-causing bacteria while red bulbs take care of inflammation. Just what the doctor ordered.

Chris Brown: “I’m absolutely obsessed with this gadget. It has noticeably reduced redness when trying to get rid of annoying spots. It’s so easy to use and small enough to travel with.”

Highly Commended: StylSmile Teeth Whitening Toothbrush Kit

Big results, minimal effort. That’s exactly what’s on offer with this whitening toothbrush from personalcare innovator Stylideas. The 2-in-1 toothpaste is designed to be used daily with the light-enhanced sonic toothbrush and as a treatment paste with the weekly-use accelerator tray.

BEST SHAVING PRODUCT

Rituals The Ritual of Samurai Shave CreamAcqua di Parma Barbiere Shaving Gel

Winner: Rituals The Ritual of Samurai Shave Cream

Dear beard, we’ve had good times, we’ve had hairy moments, but like holidays and Netflix binges, all good things must come to an end. It’s time to reclaim your mornings and rediscover those few minutes of calm quiet, just you, your razor and the scent of basil and ginseng easing you into the day.

Rituals’ moisturising, non-lathering Samurai Shave Cream helps the razor glide across your face so smoothly, it’s almost meditative.

Mark Maciver: “This shaving cream was easy to apply and had a light scent that wasn’t overwhelming.”

Highly Commended: Acqua di Parma Barbiere Shaving Gel

Since the heritage fragrance house introduced its Barbiere grooming line a few years ago, Acqua di Parma’s masterful formulas have rarely been off bathroom shelves. Joining the existing line-up of shave oil and cream, the brand’s shaving gel turns into a rich foam on the skin for an impeccable and luxurious at-home shave experience.

THE GYM-BAG HERO

Bulldog Oil Control Bar SoapSeb Man The Multi-Tasker 3 in 1 Hair Beard and Body Wash

Winner: Bulldog Oil Control Bar Soap

Lightweight, compact, and just a proper problem-solver, the judges couldn’t find an area Bulldog’s Oil Control Bar Soap didn’t tick a box for. Charcoal and witch hazel don’t leave dirt a chance – ideal post-workout when the skin’s oil production is in overdrive.

As with all of the brand’s products, there’s no plastic here. Instead, it’s wrapped in responsibly produced minimal packaging, printed with natural inks. All in all, we think it’s the dog’s…

Luke Worthington: “It’s great for an all-over wash, smells good and is easy to rinse. Often soap bars can be quite dehydrating on the face, but this wasn’t.

Highly Commended: Seb Man The Multi-Tasker Hair, Beard and Body Wash

Work, life-admin, social obligations, and on top of that you’ve found time to work out – you’re the real multi-tasker here.

For everything shower-based, there’s SebMan’s space-saving Multi-Tasker 3 in 1 Hair Beard and Body Wash, which is loaded with energising guarana extract while the bergamot and pink pepper scent will leave you smelling as good as you feel.
