Rocket Raccoon and Robert Downey Jr. Reunite in BossLogic’s Dolittle Poster

Movies

Robert Downey Jr. recently took to his social media to share the official character (animal) posters for Dolittle, and there were a lot of them. Arguably, the most popular one, however, didn’t come from the oscar-buzzworthy actor, it came from a fan. In a recent tweet, BossLogic gave fans a look at a world in which Bradley Cooper’s Rocket joined Tony once again in RDJ’s first post-Avengers: Endgame film.

Along with the picture of Rocket resting on Dolittle‘s shoulder, BossLogic gave his own explanation for the even-more-extended universe, “Tony realised he can communicate with animals when meeting Rocket. So in Endgame, Tony had planned with Rocket to fake his death so he could live with the animals leaving the avengers behind. Except Peter, he used his Stark tech to transform him into a dog named JIP.”

Following the massive success as Iron-Man, Robert Downey Jr. is taking on another recognizable character with the role of Doctor John Dolittle, the famous medical doctor and veterinarian of Queen Victoria’s England. Following the death of his wife, Dolittle‘s eccentric personality turns recluse as he isolates himself from humanity. Thanks to his ability to talk to animals, he can rely on his menagerie for company. But when the queen gets sick, a reluctant Dolittle must sail with his self-appointed apprentice played by Harry Collett (Dunkirk) to a mythological land to find a cure.

So far, the marketing materials that include these original Dolittle character posters have given us a glimpse at the whimsical tone and Downey’s expert performance with captivating antics (and lighter tone of voice). Unfortunately, Rocket will not actually make an appearance in the film, but a slew of stellar actors provided their voices to bring the other animals to life. The cast includes Tom Holland as Jip, Emma Thompson as the trusty parrot Polynesia, Rami Malek as the gorilla Chee-Chee, John Cena as the polar bear Yoshi, Kumail Nanjiani as the ostrich Plimpton and Octavia Spencer as the duck Dab-Dab along with Ralph Fiennes as Barry, Selena Gomez as Betsy and Marion Cotillar as Tutu.

Dolittle is yet another reimagining of the 1967 film starring Rex Harrison. It was first remade in the 90’s with Eddie Murphy in the titular role, which in turn spawned three more films. Murphy did not return for Dr. Dolittle 3 and Dr. Dolittle: Tail to the Chief with Kyla Pratt taking the lead. The latest iteration of Hugh Lofting’s character is written and directed by Oscar-Winner Stephen Gaghan (Syriana, Traffic) with a seemingly lighter touch added in reshoots helmed by director Jonathan Liebesman (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles) from scenes written by Chris McKay (The LEGO Batman Movie).

Dolittle is produced by the men behind Alice in Wonderland and Maleficient, Joe Roth and Jeff Kirschenbaum under Roth/Kirschenbaum Films. Downey’s wife, Susan Downey (Sherlock Holmes franchise, The Judge) is producing through their production company Team Downey while Robert Downey Jr. himself will executive produce alongside Sarah Bradshaw (The Mummy, Maleficent) and Zachary Roth (Maleficent: Mistress of Evil). You can check out what the fans had to say about it on Bosslogic’s official twitter account. The film is for release in 2020.
