Edge of Tomorrow 2 Director Has No Idea If Sequel Will Ever Happen

Movies

Will we ever see Edge of Tomorrow 2? Maybe not. The greatest video game movie not based on a video game, Edge of Tomorrow, was a runaway hit back in 2014. Pitting a time-hopping Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt against an invading extraterrestrial force, Doug Liman’s film is an action-packed critical darling, and a much-anticipated sequel has been on the cards for years. Sadly, it sounds like that sequel is looking more and more unlikely, despite a script being finished and everyone involved wanting more.

Director Doug Liman has placed the blame on the busy schedules of his A-list duo, as well as his own diary being pretty crowded.

“I honestly have no idea. Between my schedule, Tom [Cruise]’s schedule, and Emily [Blunt]’s schedule, it’s tough. Certainly, it’s a world that I love, and like with Impulse, there’s a lot more story to be told.”

Though we of course have no idea what the Edge of Tomorrow 2 story details are at this point, considering the first film wrapped up so cleanly, it certainly sounds like Liman has an abundance of ways to drop Mr. Cruise back into this world. No doubt with the intention of killing him over and over again for our entertainment.

“And there’s a lot more story to be told, with Emily Blunt and Tom Cruise, in the world of Edge of Tomorrow. It’s the same thing with Impulse, where I was like, “Wouldn’t it be fun if . . .? Wouldn’t it be cool if . . .?” All of Edge of Tomorrow literally came from Tom Cruise and myself just sitting around saying,”Wouldn’t it be cool if . . .? Wouldn’t it be fun if . . .?”

With most of those things, there just wasn’t room for them in the movie. I start from a place of, “What would be fun for me to see?” I start from the place of the audience. It’s not about, what do I want to shoot? It’s about, what would it be fun for an audience to see, and what would I wanna see, if I were in the audience?”

With the first film sitting at a certified fresh 90% on Rotten Tomatoes, and with audiences wanting to see Cruise go on another timey-wimey adventure and put through the wringer once more, it sounds like Liman and his stars need to sit down, crack open their diaries, and sort this out immediately. Edge of Tomorrow 2 was confirmed to move forward in May. The first Edge of Tomorrow unfolds in a near future in which an alien race has hit the Earth in an unrelenting assault, unbeatable by any military unit in the world.

Major William Cage is an officer who has never seen a day of combat when he is unceremoniously dropped into what amounts to a suicide mission. Killed within minutes, Cage now finds himself inexplicably thrown into a time loop-forcing him to live out the same brutal combat over and over, fighting and dying again…and again.

But with each battle, Cage becomes able to engage the adversaries with increasing skill, alongside Special Forces warrior Rita Vrataski. And, as Cage and Rita take the fight to the aliens, each repeated encounter gets them one step closer to defeating the enemy. This comes from Collider.
