Outside Lands 2019, Day 1 Highlights: Lil Wayne Rides Through ‘Old Town Road’ Remix & More

Music

Outside Lands started strong thanks to some burning automobiles, Britney Spears covers and a remix of “Old Town Road” from Lil Wayne in the middle of a run of his own hits on Friday (Aug. 9).

From Miya Folick‘s endorphin-packed performance to 21 Pilots’ gymnastics routines set to music, here were the best moments from the first day of Outside Lands 2019.

Miya Folick gets everyone dancing, bouncing and jumping all over the place

The Angelena rocker was direct and to the point halfway through her set on the Panhandle stage: “I know it’s 3 p.m., but I WANNA FREAK OUT!” Miya Folick proceeded to do just that with “Stop Talking,” the adrenaline-spiker of a single off Premonitions, her 2018 full-length debut. From start to finish, Folick’s set showed grace and grit: at times, as she did with “Stop Talking” and later with “Freak Out,” her joy was palpable as she hurled herself all over the stage and bounced up and down with her bandmates. Raw fury abounded in other moments, namely with “Deadbody” and “Thingamajig,” which recalled the intensity of Alanis Morrisette or Dolores O’Riordan at various points. All in all, a spectacular, crowd-pleasing showing to make her home state proud.

The Marías are the epitome of disco lounge cool

Any band that can pull off a bossa nova cover of Britney Spears’ “… Baby One More Time” is a marvel, and L.A.’s The Marías brought style, humor and smooth bilingual jams for a mid-afternoon dance party. Wearing coordinating ensembles of white turtlenecks and black slacks (for the dudes) and a white vinyl trench coat and black two-piece ensemble with sheer, sparkling overlay (for María Zardoya, lead singer), The Marías played “Ruthless,” “I Don’t Know You” and other originals before demanding everyone sing along with the Spears classic.

Lil Wayne had more fun than pretty much everyone and covered “Old Town Road” in the process

The Young Money boss sprinted to the center of the Land’s End stage while letting the bars of “6 Foot 7 Foot” rip, and the energy stayed at that boisterous level as he worked through his hits. Lil Wayne and blink-182 are in the midst of a co-headlining tour, and the rapper recently said that he’s having “too much fun” on the road with them. His sheer delight was oh so apparent and a constant throughout the set. He roared with joy when fans were drowning him out with the words of “Mrs. Officer,” and he tore off the jacket of his jewel-toned warm-up suit at the height of “Bed Rock.” After introducing himself to the festival as “the king” of mixtapes, he then dabbled with a new remix for “Old Town Road,” which brought the entire festival to a fever pitch. Whatever’s happening on the road with blink-182, it’s working, as that fun was contagious.

blink-182 barrel down on the hits with plenty of sass to go around

“Dammit” may have been the perfect soundtrack for the all-hell-breaks-loose scene from Can’t Hardly Wait in 1998, but it’s also a great match for a music festival crowd looking for a euphoric, power chord-driven release. Mark Hoppus, Matt Skiba and Travis Barker have a new album dropping on Sept. 20. ”Blame It,” one of its singles, was warmly received by the audience (who even sang along before they knew the words thanks to the lyric video scrolling onstage), but the tried-and-true favorites scored the bulk of the cheers (though Hoppus’ witty banter was an undeniable highlight).

21 Pilots scorch the stage — no, seriously, there was a car on fire

Pyro, gymnastics, a House of Pain “Jump Around” cover, plenty of piano interludes and close contact with the audience — 21 Pilots didn’t slow down for a second of their marathon of a set, and threw in plenty of tricks and goofy stunts for good measure.
